Speaking of having a foretaste of ministry: sounds like men in the Bible Joseph, Moses, Jesus and Paul. We can look at all their lives and see God using them in some measure, then 'shelving' them. Joseph was 20 years in waiting; Moses- 40; Paul 7-8 years where we see him do seemingly nothing. and yet God was working it all out.
There is a tendency in some people to place ministry itself in centrality where Jesus alone belongs. They think if you are not active in doing full time ministry somehow you are disobeying the call of God. Jesus, at 26 years old, and doing menial blue collar building was dead center in the will of God
Paul was mending tents in Tarsus several years before Barnabas found him, and he was right in the center of God's will; the same with Moses tending Jethro's sheep, and Joseph overseeing Potipher's house. God Bless, josh
